Mesut Özil has been spotted at the EURO 2024 quarterfinal between Netherlands and Turkey accompanied by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The two share a notable backstory.

Ahead of the 2018 World Cup Özil and Ilkay Gündogan both of Turkish heritage were photographed with Turkish President Erdoğan drawing criticism for blending football with politics.

Despite their attempts to downplay any political motives Mesut faced mounting backlash especially following Germany early exit from the tournament.

He ultimately cited racism and unfair treatment as major factors in his decision to retire from international football.
